For those visiting Long Beach’s Belmont
Shores neighborhood, Bono’s is a delightful Italian restaurant
that you must seek out! The huge wrap-around patio makes them hard
to miss, and with the lovely airy interior with large picture windows
out to the street, it gives the feeling of dining in an elegant
open-air pavilion. Bono’s is the latest aspiration of Christy
Bono, daughter of the late Sonny Bono, who also owns Christy’s
Ristorante in Los Angeles. The menu at Bono’s is inspired
by traditional Italian cuisine with a Southern Californian flair.
I
had visited Bono’s earlier that day while selling wine with
our Long Beach rep, Mario Mitchell, and knew I had to come back
here for dinner. So I took my friend Paige, with whom I was spending
the night, and we sat at one of the tables overlooking the patio.
It was a warm evening so we decided to share a bottle of Carina
Cellars 2007 Viognier, which had been added to their wine
list that day! We started off by sharing the gourmet Mac
and Cheese with black truffle shavings, pancetta, gruyere
and asiago cheese, and it was absolutely decadent and a perfect
pairing with the Viognier.
For the main course, I ordered the Alaskan
Halibut topped with fresh strawberries, vine-ripened
tomatoes and feta cheese over rise pilaf. The strawberries were
a delightful touch to the sauce and gave an delightful flavor
to the fish. Paige enjoyed the grilled Swordfish with garlic,
scallions and a splash of white wine, which packed a lot of flavor
and was cooked to flaky perfection.
